History

A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots – Marcus Garvey

Learning about History is crucial for understanding why people, places and cultures are the way they are. At Whitegrove we aim to give children a strong feel for their place in world and this is further developed by understanding how history has shaped the world they live in. Children learn about significant changes throughout British history, from prehistoric to modern times. When studying the history of the wider world, comparisons are made with modern day Britain and the children learn about the impact of Ancient civilizations on modern life.

As our children are growing up in a fast-paced world where change is evident all around them, it is important that they understand how times have changed and continue to change, the diversity of societies throughout history and the challenges of their own time. It is also crucial that the children understand cause and effect within History. In the words of George Santayana, ‘those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ We aim to equip our children with the knowledge, understanding and critical thinking skills to learn lessons from the past and make choices about their future.

At Whitegrove we aim to make history come alive for the children. When learning about different periods in history, the children experience hands-on learning through visits and visitors. Some of the children’s favourites include a visit to Milestones Museum and immersive days with ‘History off the Page’ involving dressing up, drama and discovery. This, in addition to practical tasks and problem solving in class, makes learning feel relevant, purposeful and memorable.
